Merciful God and Giver of Perfect Gifts by Lesego Masango

2 Samuel 12:13

David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord has put away your sin, you shall not die.”

These words, spoken by King David, can be difficult to say, but when a child of God saved by the Saviour, Jesus Christ, recognizes that they have erred, their first reaction is to let go of pride (which so defiles in many ways) but acknowledges and confesses the sins committed before the Lord. The infallible Word of God teaches and admonishes us on the consequences of sex outside wedlock. However, as humans, we tend to be disobedient to God as we prioritise that which is against His will, one of our excuses being that we are “humans after all.” Hahahaha, what a lie.

We must be intentional in binding the Word of God around our necks, as the Holy Spirit will always remind us that our bodies are the temples of the Lord and, as such, we should honor Him with everything including our bodies. We do this by prioritising the Lord and crowning Him as the King of our hearts as we live for Him and, moreover, avoid the enemy’s traps. With all that He brings freely in us, we should be able to keep looking forward to the prize God has for us. Therefore, we should not become weary of doing good. We do not have to live subjected to the pressure of allowing the flesh to dictate to us. You may be wondering: now where is this going? I had my first child 16 years ago, before I was legally married (outside wedlock). What a handsome boy! God has used this experience to turn me into the most patient parent. Upon realizing what I had gotten myself into at the time, I informed a close friend who was a pastor’s wife. They led me to the Word and showed me that we all serve a God who forgives when one requests without any ulterior motives.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness

Like the son in the parable of the lost son, I acknowledged my intentional sin (Luke 15:17-18) and repented before the Lord (Acts 2:38). The beauty of a repentant heart brings about the infilling of the Holy Spirit. With God having forgiven me, I saw His Mighty hand upon my life. I fell pregnant as I was concluding my Honours degree, and at that time, I was not even sure how I would take care of the child or what would become of me. But hey! I saw God; He clothed me with the finest and glorious robe.

When we fully repent and are ready to be used by God, like the father of the prodigal (lost) son, He slaughters a fattened calf for you and hosts a feast to commemorate your return to Him (Luke 15:22-24). God showed me that He indeed washes away all our sins, and completely forgets them.

In the process, I was invited to an interview for a bursary at a certain company (I was about 8 months pregnant) to study towards a Masters of Science degree. Yaaay, clap hands for the Lord! His goodness and mercy were with me at that interview. God did exceedingly, abundantly and beyond what I had imagined. I was awarded the bursary and I was also told to stay at home for a while to take care of my newborn baby.

In a nutshell, we all serve a God who is forever ready to welcome us back home with warm hands. He gives second, third and million chances. We need to discern the voice of the Holy Spirit when He rebukes us of any wrongdoing that aims to please the flesh. God loves us all and wants to see us being conquerors of every idol that competes for His attention and time. He never withholds good things from us. We must always ensure that we don’t sin again, by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
