Book Review: WayMaker Author: Ann Voskamp

This beautiful book has been chosen as Women of Reverence's book of the Month! We believe it will encourage and refresh you.

What if the expectations that you’ve been handed, that define success, fulfillment, and meaning in ways that do not correspond with the actual topography and reality of your life, leave you looking for a better way?

Four times New York Times bestselling author Ann Voskamp pens an unforgettably vulnerable love story – the story of her marriage that she almost lost, and of her daughter she almost didn’t find – and how to find the way forward when there seems to be no way.

In the midst of breaking her husband’s heart in all kinds of ways, and facing the open heart surgery of their youngest daughter, Ann finds herself hospitalized for her own literal heart failure — to only finally find the way to the actual heart of everything: a sacred way of life, a rule of life, that turns the whole of a life around.

It’s true: heartache, grief, suffering, and obstacles—they all come in waves. There is no controlling life’s storms; there is only learning the way to walk through the waves.

In WayMaker, bestselling author Ann Voskamp hands us a map that makes meaning of life and shows the way through to the places we’ve only dreamed of reaching. In the face of suffering through seemingly unbearable situations, we can rest in the fact that we are not alone. • Parents who ache for the return of their prodigal

What drew you to read this book?:

There are dreams tucked away in my heart, and desire to live my life wholeheartedly to the Lord. I love Ann Voskamps writing, and I was curious about what she had to say about: “finding the way to the life you’ve always dreamed of”, the tagline for the book.

What impact did this book have on your life?:

It’s been a long time since I have written along the pages of a book, highlighting and journaling as the words, the wisdom and the life poured down into my heart. I drunk deeply, paused often, and allowed God to comfort, teach, direct my heart towards the true longing of my heart: to be deeply loved, known and close to the Father. This book was the honesty and vulnerability I needed.

In a paragraph, what is the main point of this book?:

This is a book about what happens when the life you imagined takes a detour and the journey to surrendering to living and embracing both the valleys and the mountain tops and everything in between. This is a book you need to pause in order to read. It is a book that draws and pulls you in to be still, to quieten the noises and come face to face with the WayMaker and the surprising path He often chooses to give you, your true heart’s desire. The stories in this book are real and raw and relatable; the weaving of truth encouragement and healing words like gems to be mined across the pages; and the healing whispers of the Father who woos us back home when life makes us forget where we have come from and where we ought to be going.
