Name of Book:

Success is a choice

Author:

John C. Maxwell

What drew you to read this book:

This book chose me, it waited for me when I enquired with Colette. That was a sure sign; I was instantly drawn to it as the title is so sobering, and jumps off the cover. I love John Maxwell’s way of ordering words, it’s digestible and to the point. God knows at any point what we need and at that moment I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the decisions. The title forced me to redefine how I view decisions (the outcome of a choice) and highlighted the importance of immersing myself in the process of choice.

What impact did this book have:

I completed the Strength finder (referred in the book) and know the full list of 34 strengths, so I have the one part of the formulae. This book covered the Right Choices and has helped me take critical stock of where I am and what’s missing. I was reminded of the parable of the talents, and how one day I will have to give account of what I’ve done with what God entrusted to me. This book has given me a renewed perspective, as I’ve drawn up plan to Fire up my passion, Believe in myself to Cultivate Good relationships. My next step is to draw up some form of tracking guide, so I can assess and learn as I go. Fail forward!

In a paragraph, what is the main point of the book:

This book is a real treasure box and can be used as a guide, compass, assessment and check point continuously. John Maxwell gets real with the statement: Make the choices that make you successful. He shares a formula WHO YOU ARE + RIGHT CHOICES = SUCCESS. Who you are = your God-given talents, the things that you can do without breaking a sweat. Right Choices = covered in the book as the 14 key choices (see below) that, when given the attention will propel you to success. You now have the opportunity when working through the book, to assess what the gaps are. Commit to choices that bring success Believe in Yourself Fire Up your passion Initiate Action Focus your energy Value Preparation Embrace Practice Embody Perseverance Demonstrate Courage Become More Teachable Develop Strong Character Cultivate Good Relationships Commit to Responsibility Lean In to Teamwork The key choices are action keys e.g. the word Passion is often used in articles of self-development, Fire Up your Passion gives a specific action to get your Passion moving, if that is one of your shortfalls. Each key is covered in detail, where he shares the what, why, who and how about each key, in a very practical way. Once you’ve worked through the book, you will definitely have a view of where your possible shortfalls are AND practical next steps to follow. The real stories shared in the book, together with the quotes makes it easy to share little tips

Everyone who has ever asked or wondered, what am I doing wrong? Surely, I can do better? Have I reached my potential? No matter the age, or life stage, this is an easy read and can definitely be used to help guide your kids when they get stuck with any project or assessment they’ve done.
