Book Review on Deceived No More by Doreen Virtue

Women of Reverence would like to thank Simone Allen for her Book Review.

The Miraculous Story of a Hugely Successful New Age Teacher’s Conversion to Christianity

In this brilliant, utterly captivating memoir, Doreen Virtue chronicles her journey in discovering everything she believed in was a lie. She poignantly shares the price she’s paid for following Jesus.

New Age teachings are based on concepts that sound almost irresistible. But as Doreen discovered, they come with a hidden price: your eternal destiny. Here is a riveting, personal confessional of how a former false prophet learned to trust God after nearly wasting a lifetime being independent and willful—trying to predict and control the future—and how Jesus saved her soul from deception and opened her eyes to His truth.

Deceived No More can help you learn how to discern dangerous teachings so you can detect and avoid deception. Topics include:

  • How to spot New Age teachings, and why they’re dangerous

  • Biblical ways to deal with persecution, spiritual warfare, and other post-conversion issues

  • How to witness to a New Ager

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a wife to Michael Allen and a deacon at Venture Church in Johannesburg. I have the great privilege of teaching high-school History and I have a passion for imparting knowledge and sharing my experiences with others.

What drew you to read this book:

I was asked to review the book. This was a good thing as I am quite the skeptic when it comes to ‘New Age’ and likely wouldn’t have chosen to read it myself despite the fact that it revolves around this woman’s testimony. I am glad the book was given to me.

What impact did this book have:

This book has ticks with the reader between readings - it certainly did for me. Doreen Virtue has an incredible testimony of Jesus' deliverance from her New Age beliefs of which she had made a successful career and ultimately gave up to follow Jesus.

In a paragraph, what is the main point:

As referenced within the book, Christianity and New Age beliefs are like water and oil - they cannot and do not mix. ‘Deceived No More’ shares Doreen Virtue's testimony and is also a caution to New Age believers to not be deceived by their belief system and false teachings.

Who would benefit from reading this book:

This book would benefit believers who have friends or family in the New Age who they are trying to teach about Jesus. Individuals who are in the New Age would also benefit from this book as it points out the inaccuracies of the New Age and the incorrect teachings which give a false sense of security in how New Agers identify ‘Jesus’ and ‘God’ which is not in line with Biblical teachings. While Virtue does explain certain terminology, as a person with no history or experience of New Age beliefs I found it difficult to keep up with some of the terminology. Apart from New Agers looking for a useful tool to challenge their beliefs, I would not recommend this book to a new believer as I think wisdom and greater understanding would benefit a reader when referring to certain resources in the book.
